If you're like me, once you have each new book, you verify the first printing number line on the copyright page and then never look closely at the rest of the copyright page. The modern copyright pages are quite crowded with information.

The Simon & Schuster books of yore (pre-2009) had much less information on the copyright pages. I've often looked at those copyright pages, but I guess the information overload of the modern ones has caused me never to look at them closely, at least not until this weekend.

I've mentioned my obsession with the Keeper of the Lost Cities (KotLC) series, which is also published by Simon & Schuster under the Aladdin imprint. I'm now searching for first printings. I will get more into that in an upcoming post. Here, I stick to what's relevant to the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books.

I have managed to acquire the second printing of the first KotLC book. As I examined the number line, 2468109753, I saw what was printed on the line immediately above.

Please click on all images in order to see them clearly.

I circled two areas of the page. The book was published in October 2012 (see top circled area). Look at the line immediately above the second printing number line (see bottom circled area). That line ends with "0912 FFG." I haven't worked out what "FFG" means, but I believe that "0912" indicates that this specific book was printed in September 2012. That would indicate that the first two printings of KotLC #1 were run before the book was ever published.

You might think that "0912" is a suggested age range, like 9-12, but it definitely can't be that based on what I've seen in other books. Let's look at some of those other books.

Here's the copyright page from one of the Keeper books I purchased last year.

This book has "0622 FFG" above the number line. "0622" cannot be the recommended age range, since age 6-22 makes no sense for a children's book. It must mean that the book was printed in June 2022.

I then started checking Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. I found that the first printing of Nancy Drew Girl Detective #39 has the expanded copyright page. I have a later printing of #38 that also has the expanded copyright page, but I'm not sure if the first printing of #38 did. All I know is that the expanded copyright page came into use sometime in late 2009 at the time of publication of either NDGD #38 or #39.

Here is the copyright page of the first printing of NDGD #39.

It has "1009 OFF" above the first printing number line. The book was published in December 2009, so it looks like the first print run was in October 2009.

Here is the copyright page of the first printing hardcover of Nancy Drew Diaries #24 What Disappears in Vegas..., which was published in January 2024.

"1223 BVG" is on the line above the number code. The book must have been printed in December 2023.

This might be old news to many of you, but I found it enlightening. This will help me in figuring out the age of modern Simon & Schuster books that are not first printings.Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-38406670684418494402024-03-17T13:40:00.001-05:002024-03-17T13:40:15.197-05:00Spring Break Sale at Jennifer's Series Books
All of my books are 10% off this week.

Jennifer's Series Books on eBay
Jennifer's Series Books on Etsy

Sales have remained very slow, and I hope to get some books to move this week. Hopefully, I will be able to get started listing some of these books.
Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-50228578251743689912024-03-15T11:00:00.015-05:002024-03-15T11:00:00.355-05:00The Warning and The Fallout by Kristy Acevedo
A two-book series by Kristy Acevedo was published by Jolly Fish Press in 2016 and 2017.

1. Consider, 2016
2. Contribute, 2017

The books were republished in 2023 by Sourcebooks Fire under new titles.

1. The Warning, 2023
2. The Fallout, 2023

The books are no longer available under their original titles. What would you do? The first in a fast-paced and gripping YA dystopian series for anyone who's ever felt like their life—their world—is on the brink of destruction.

Like most high school seniors, Alexandra Lucas is caught between living in the moment and an unknown future. Her anxiety disorder doesn't make that any easier. But she's coping—until her train stops on the way home from a concert with her boyfriend. At first, she's worried about breaking curfew. Then terror echoes through their train car.

A mysterious doorway has appeared beside the tracks, and a hologram claiming to be a human from the future shares a sinister warning. A comet is on a collision course with earth. All life there will end in six months' time. To survive, people must step through one of the many portals that have opened around the world.

The holograms claim to offer safety. But how can anyone be sure? Stay or go—everyone must make their own choice. Alex's family, her friends, her boyfriend all have different ideas. Alex is only sure of one thing: she wants to decide for herself. But every decision comes at a price.

These books fall under both the dystopian fiction and science fiction categories.

Alex has generalized anxiety disorder and suffers from panic attacks. Even minor stress causes her to have paranoid thoughts. Significant stress makes her spiral out of control to where she can end up in the fetal position, shaking uncontrollably. Some readers might find this aspect of the books to be either disturbing or annoying. Those who suffer from anxiety will likely be able to relate to it.

Here is one example from the first book.

Page 74:

You would think that remembering I forgot something would make me feel better, but instead it justifies my anxiety, which starts a loop in my brain thinking that I must be forgetting something else.

What else am I forgetting? There's something else. I know there's something. Something. Something. If I forget it, something bad will happen. Something really bad. And I won't be able to fix it.

STOP IT.

The loop continues.

I dig through my dirty laundry, then open and close every drawer in my room, searching and double-checking for something to remind me what I could be forgetting. My body sweats as I spin in circles.

STOP IT. Everything's fine.

But what if it's not fine? What if I left an iron plugged in? What if I start a fire? What if I go fishing and then come back and the house is burned down? What if my parents and Benji are burnt to a crisp and they have to use their dental records to identify the bodies? What if the police think I did it on purpose? What if—

I take a pill and wait for it to rescue me.

For me, Alexa's anxiety added to the suspense and even caused me some anxiety. At one point in the second book, I
quickly swiped through over 50 pages to verify what would happen with a certain character. I just had to know in order to reassure myself.

I also worried that Kristy Acevedo was going to pull a Veronica Roth with her ending. If you've read the Divergent Trilogy, then you know what I mean. [Upon rereading this review prior to publication, I realized that I indirectly spoil the ending of the third book in the Divergent Trilogy, so if you care, then skip the rest of this paragraph.] I will never read the Divergent books again because of how the third book ended. I decided to have faith that Alex would make it out of the second book alive. That calmed me down.

The countdown in each book fuels the reader's anxiety. Each chapter begins with how many hours remain before humans must make an important decision. For instance:

Chapter 7

Day 24: August—3,854 hours to decide

Each time I started a chapter, I took the number of hours and divided it by 24 to see how many days remained before the decision would be final. For 3,854 hours, 160.6 days were left.

These books have some very unexpected twists. I truly didn't know what was going to happen.

These are excellent books. It took me just 4 1/2 days to read both books, and the books are moderate in length. How fast I read is a good measure of how much I enjoy a book. These books make for great reading.

Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-25664464927928903002024-03-13T11:00:00.001-05:002024-03-13T11:00:00.135-05:00Judy Bolton #7 The Mystic Ball Glossy Internal Illustrations
The early Judy Bolton books have glossy internal illustrations.
Click on each image in order to see it at a higher resolution.

Glossy frontispiece used from 1934 to 1942:

When a secret society has you in their sights, it can lead to power, privilege... or death.

It's been two weeks since Polly St. James went missing. The police, the headmistress of Torrey-Wells Academy, and even her parents have ruled her a runaway. But not Maren, her best friend and roommate. She knows Polly had a secret that she was about to share with Maren before she disappeared— something to do with the elite, ultra-rich crowd at Torrey-Wells.

Then Maren finds an envelope hidden among Polly's things: an invitation to the Gamemaster's Society. Do not tell anyone, it says. Maren is certain her classmates in the Society know the truth about what happened to Polly, though it's no easy feat to join. Once Maren's made it through the treacherous initiation, she discovers a world she never knew existed within her school, where Society members compete in high-stakes games for unheard-of rewards—Ivy League connections, privileges, favors.

But Maren's been drawn into a different game: for every win, she'll receive a clue about Polly. And as Maren keeps winning, she begins to see just how powerful the Society's game is—bigger and deadlier than she ever imagined. They see, they know, they control. And they kill.

The characters in this book are flat. I felt nothing for any of them, including the protagonist. Maren is worried about her missing friend, Polly, but I never cared about Polly in the least. If I don't care, then why would I want to read the book?

I did find the story interesting enough that I ended up reading the entire book. The story is decent but nothing special at all. I would rate this book as overall good. By "overall good," I'm saying that the book is either borderline good or good in some places but not others. My feelings are lukewarm, even though I "overall" enjoyed the book.Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-13729867892869949092024-03-09T11:00:00.001-06:002024-03-09T11:00:00.128-06:00Judy Bolton #6 The Yellow Phantom Glossy Internal Illustrations
The early Judy Bolton books have glossy internal illustrations.
Click on each image in order to see it at a higher resolution.

Glossy frontispiece used from 1933 to 1942:

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This is a deeply suspenseful book, and it's best not to read online reviews since many people are a bit careless with what they reveal. Below is the publisher's summary, which only reveals information that the reader learns very early in the book.

That's Not My Name by Megan Lally is a YA thriller published by Sourcebooks Fire on December 26, 2023.

Publisher's summary:

It was a mistake to trust him.

Shivering and bruised, a teen wakes up on the side of a dirt road with no memory of how she got there—or who she is. A passing officer takes her to the police station, and not long after, a frantic man arrives. He's been searching for her for hours. He has her school ID, her birth certificate, and even family photos.

He is her father. Her name is Mary. Or so he says.

When Lola slammed the car door and stormed off into the night, Drew thought they just needed some time to cool off. Except Lola disappeared, and the sheriff, his friends, and the whole town are convinced Drew murdered his girlfriend. Forget proving his innocence, he needs to find her before it's too late. The longer Lola is missing, the fewer leads there are to follow… and the more danger they both are in.

This book is very suspenseful, and the reader will be kept guessing until the end. Readers may have an inkling about part of the
plot's resolution, but it's highly unlikely that they will guess the
entire resolution. I had a suspicion but wasn't sure. I was shocked at the full reveal.

That's Not My Name has alternating viewpoints. This is usually annoying in books, but it is quite effective in this case. The alternating viewpoints between Mary and Drew move the plot forward steadily in an interesting fashion that keeps the reader engaged and guessing as to what is really going on.

There's no problem telling Mary and Drew apart because of their vastly different situations. Mary can't remember anything about her past, and Drew is desperate to find his girlfriend, Lola.

This book has a newspaper article after the conclusion of the main action which is followed by an epilogue. The newspaper article is interesting, and the epilogue is quite captivating and effective. The epilogue satisfactorily wraps up the plot and is well worth reading.

I despise epilogues and consider the abomination at the end of Harry Potter Deathly Hallows to be the worst offender, but the epilogue in That's Not My Name is great.

I love Megan Lally's delightful descriptions.

Page 14: His hair looks like it's thinking of going gray but hasn't committed to the change.

Page 49: A motion light over the door flickers on, illuminating us and the driveway. The darkness pushes back to the tree line and hovers there like a living thing.

Page 55: Incredibly soft jersey sheets stretch across the mattress with a massive white fluffy down comforter that weighs a ton and smells like a good night's sleep.

One character is obsessed about sleuthing and uses that word repeatedly. On page 109, another character thinks to himself, "Wannabe Nancy Drew over here probably thought she'd get me to confess and then backflip out the window or something."

I also wonder whether it's just a coincidence that one of the protagonists is named Drew.

This book could be turned into an excellent movie adaptation.

That's Not My Name is an outstanding book.
Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-38801962354484653362024-03-05T11:00:00.000-06:002024-03-05T11:00:00.138-06:00Judy Bolton #5 The Ghost Parade Glossy Internal Illustrations
The early Judy Bolton books have glossy internal illustrations.
Click on each image in order to see it at a higher resolution.

Glossy frontispiece used from 1933 to 1942:

Glossy internal illustration used from 1933 to 1937:

Glossy internal illustration used from 1933 to 1937:

Glossy internal illustration used from 1933 to 1937:

Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-51337979032185966372024-03-03T11:00:00.036-06:002024-03-03T11:00:00.299-06:00Finding Modern Young Adult Books to Read
I have a lot of trouble finding young adult books that are of the type that I enjoy. I have read Kindle samples of dozens of YA books over the years that I have not found interesting enough to read past the sample.
I seldom find anything I want to read from YA lists found online in various places. It's like taking a stab in the dark trying to find something good. It doesn't help that a lot of people lump adult books in with the YA books. I'll check a book that's on a YA list and discover that it's aimed at adults. Not helpful.

Even worse, we now have to deal with books written by artificial intelligence. I've heard that Amazon is now full of such books, and I wish to avoid them. I want to read books written by actual people, not a fake book created by a computer that copied content from real books.

This means that I must now be wary of books published by independent authors. With some care, I can still partake of works by independent authors, but I will have to vet them first.

But still, there's the problem of finding books that appeal to me.

I got really lucky in early February when I stumbled across the book That's Not My Name by Megan Lally. I wasn't even looking for a book to read.

I was reading this post on Reddit:

The lack of appealing teen literature is causing teens to stop reading

It's an odd post that was debunked by commenters. Something about the post or its comments which I now can't remember caused me to run a Google search for YA books. I ended up looking at teen book pages on both Simon & Schuster's and Barnes & Noble's sites. Based on my browser history, I apparently saw the title These Deadly Prophecies on the Barnes & Noble site and then visited Amazon's page for that book.

Immediately after I viewed the page for These Deadly Prophecies, I visited Amazon's page for That's Not My Name. Amazon has dynamic content on all pages listing other books and products for sale, and I must have seen That's Not My Name and clicked on it. The summary intrigued me, and I enjoyed the free sample. That resulted in me purchasing and reading the book.

That's Not My Name is the best book I've read in months (aside from Keeper of the Lost Cities). I would love to duplicate this serendipitous sequence of events. But how? I found the book solely by chance. I guess that's also what happened with Keeper of the Lost Cities nearly a year ago.

If only I could do this more often! Many great books exist that I would love reading, but I have to find them myself. Books have to be in a certain style with a certain tone in order for me to enjoy them. Many books are recommended to me that just don't appeal to me. I'm on my own here.

I always read through reviews right after I finish a book. As I read through the reviews for That's Not My Name, I saw praise for Sourcebooks Fire.

Sourcebooks is a publishing company, and Sourcebooks Fire is the imprint it uses for its young adult books. One reviewer said that they get excited whenever Sourcebooks Fire has a new YA book, and they immediately read it. I was intrigued. Could the Sourcebooks Fire imprint lead me to some good books? Off I went to the Sourcebooks website, checking out the YA section.

Sourcebooks Fire books for young adults

I'm interested in YA books that are dystopian, suspenseful, or have a really good mystery. I like romance if it's just secondary to the main story. I am uninterested in YA books that are just romance novels. I find those tend to be a bit tedious and annoying. I like romance only when it's part of a story where the characters are in a dangerous situation or have a lot of intense problems of some sort (zombies, deadly viruses, nuclear war, murderers on the loose, etc.).

I began checking the Sourcebooks Fire listings, focusing mainly on the YA Thrillers subcategory. I also checked out the YA Sci-Fi subcategory.

I found a number of good books to read. Since early February, I have read these Sourcebooks Fire books.

That's Not My Name by Megan Lally - outstanding
They're Watching You by Chelsea Ichaso - a bit flat but overall good
The Warning and The Fallout by Kristy Acevedo - excellent
The Plague Land trilogy by Alex Scarrow - very good to excellent
What Happened on Hicks Road by Hannah Jayne - very good
Swarm by Jennifer Lyle - excellent
Don't Let In the Cold by Keely Parrack - excellent
The Last to Die by Kelly Garrett - good to very good

I then decided that I should look directly on the sites of other publishers. I checked a few, and I found it interesting that the Sourcebooks Fire inventory is much easier to navigate than the inventory offered by other publishers. Sourcebooks Fire also seems to have more books that are to my liking. As a result, I ended up right back on the Sourcebooks site, looking for more books.

I am now reading The Girl Who Knew Too Much by Tiffany Brooks.

I will stick to Sourcebooks Fire to see if any others are to my liking. After that, I'm going to check on some of the authors whose books I've read in the last 10 years. Perhaps they have some new books that will appeal to me.Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-28795851209667648592024-03-01T11:00:00.002-06:002024-03-01T11:00:00.144-06:00Judy Bolton #4 Seven Strange Clues Glossy Internal Illustrations
The early Judy Bolton books have glossy internal illustrations.
Click on each image in order to see it at a higher resolution.

Glossy frontispiece used from 1932 to 1942:

Glossy internal illustration used from 1932 to 1937:

Glossy internal illustration used from 1932 to 1937:

Glossy internal illustration used from 1932 to 1937:

Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-38778389887372783412024-02-28T11:00:00.004-06:002024-02-28T11:00:00.311-06:00Stigma Against the YA Category
The criticism of the young adult books category that occurs within the greater books community is annoying. Worst of all, the people criticizing YA don't understand the YA category at all and completely misrepresent what it is as they complain about it.

These people claim that any kind of book can be lumped into the YA category. They say that YA books have a simple writing style with shorter sentences and basic vocabulary. They say that YA books have certain kind of themes, like teenage angst. Most importantly, they feel that YA is just a marketing label and has no meaning.

These comments are insulting to fans of the YA genre. Books of varying reading level comprise the YA category. YA isn't just a marketing label. If people understood what the genre truly is, then they wouldn't make that kind of statement.

It's widely known in the books community that a significant percent of young adult book readers are adults. I suspect that this is why young adult books get bashed. I mean, adults are reading YA? The horror! How dare they do that!

Strangely, children's books do not get bashed. Are book enthusiasts unaware that some adults read only children's books? I guess not.

I read only children's and young adult books. This is because I like the innocence of youth. I want to read stories about characters whose lives are uncomplicated without all the adult problems. The characters aren't married or divorced. They aren't worried about their careers. This kind of book is total escapism. What's wrong with that?

From The Decade in Young Adult Fiction (quoted to point out the fallacy):

A large portion of the [young adult] genre has always relied on formulaic story lines and high volume, going back to "Carolyn Keene," the collective pseudonym of the many contracted authors hired to write Nancy Drew mysteries from the 1930s onward. It just wasn't until the 2010s that this kind of fiction showed itself capable of selling in the millions of copies. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy, set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago, sold 6.7 million books between 2011 and 2013. Copycats proliferated. Bonanzas are rare in book publishing, but this was a bona fide one.

2011–2013: The Divergent trilogy demonstrated that a dystopian YA trilogy that wasn't The Hunger Games could sell more than 6 million copies. 2012: The Hunger Games movie released. This movie suggested that dystopian YA could be as profitable a multimedia property as the fantasy worlds of Harry Potter and Twilight.

Adult readers were a significant source of the boom. In 2012, Publishers Weekly reported on a study showing that 55 percent of books intended for a YA audience (readers aged 12 to 17) were bought by adults, and 78 percent of those purchases were for the buyer’s own reading. The largest segment of this group, 30- to 44-year-olds, were responsible for 28 percent of YA book sales.

The article is interesting but wrong. First of all, the very mention of Nancy Drew shows that the author doesn't know what YA is. The only Nancy Drew books that are young adult are the Nancy Drew Files, Nancy Drew On Campus, and the River Heights series. Most people in the general public have never heard of those three series. What everything thinks of when they hear "Nancy Drew" is the original series, which consists of middle-grade mysteries. They are not young adult books.

Now, some of you are probably saying, "Wait! Nancy Drew is 18 in those books." Sure, but Nancy Drew first entered publication nearly a century ago. Those were different times. Children's books from that time often featured characters who were older teenagers. The modern Nancy Drew books are middle-grade books, even though Nancy is an older teenager. The original books are classified as middle-grade books as well, since the content is consistent with what one expects from middle-grade mysteries.

The article erroneously includes Harry Potter as a young adult series. I have seen many comments made by book enthusiasts saying that Harry Potter is young adult. This is incorrect. The belief that Harry Potter is young adult shows that these people have no idea what YA is.

Like the original Nancy Drew books, Harry Potter is a middle-grade series. Middle-grade is a category for readers who are younger than young adult. Harry Potter is 10 years old at the beginning of the Harry Potter series. YA books do not feature children who are 10. It's irrelevant that Harry ages up as the series progresses. Harry Potter does not suddenly become a young adult series in the last few books. It's still middle grade.

People also have this odd idea that Harry Potter, which is a middle-grade series, somehow made the YA category popular. Then what about these books?

Click on the image in order to see it clearly. Check out the top spines. Each book has either "YA" or "Young Adult" on the top spine. These books are all from the 1980s. I am a Gen Xer, and we loved our YA books. We still love them.

The YA books of the 1980s were very popular. Bookstores like Waldenbooks had large displays of YA books. It's ridiculous to say that YA books were not popular until after Harry Potter became popular and that no young adult book or series was a runaway success until the 2010s.

From David Streitfield's article Issues published in the Washington Post on June 25, 1985:

"Chain bookstores tend to be supermarkets of books. For teen romances, they're a mechanism to force the titles out," says George Nicholson, editor-in-chief of books for young readers at Dell, publishers of Seniors. "They make shopping easy, and they don't intimidate kids. There's no one at the checkout desk saying you shouldn't buy this or buy that."

And [youth] are buying these series in tremendous numbers. Sweet Dreams, with 88 books published, claims 19 million copies in print. Wildfire, with 70 titles, says 10 million have been sold. After 21 books, Sweet Valley High has 8 million in print. Cheerleaders, with only six books so far, is averaging 100,000 copies each. In a generally stagnant book-buying market, sales figures such as these are immensely attractive to publishers.

While each individual title did not sell in the millions, each of these series collectively sold in the millions, and this was back in the 1980s. People just don't get it. YA books have been around for a very long time and have been tremendously popular.

From my post The Growing Pains of a Facebook Group:

I understand that the real problem is that these people think that children's, middle-grade, and teen books are all the same...

A 10-year-old girl who is beginning to like boys is not at all the same as a sixteen-year-old girl in a relationship. I am not interested in the trials and tribulations of a 10-year-old girl. I only wish to see the books featuring older teens.

5th grade isn't the same as 11th grade. Think about it. Would you take a group of 5th grade students and force them to attend all the same classes as a group of 11th grade students? They'd all take English together, etc. It makes no sense. Why do people think that books aimed at 5th graders are the same as books aimed at 11th graders? They aren't the same at all.

From my post Keeping a Facebook Group from Being Boxed In:

I have figured out how to clearly describe the focus of the Vintage Teen Books group: pre-2000 young adult books that feature characters of ages 15-19. All books that fit the criteria are fine, regardless of whether they feature werewolves, prostitution, or light fluffy romance.

That's it in a nutshell. True young adult books feature teenagers, usually older teenagers, in various situations. The teenage situations almost always include dating and romance and various social issues. If a book doesn't feature teenagers in these kinds of situations, then it isn't a young adult book. This is why the Nancy Drew series isn't young adult; Nancy doesn't deal with any social issues. She does have a "special" male friend, but the relationship is platonic. Poor Ned will never get more than a chaste kiss.

When I say that I'm a fan of young adult books, then I mean that I enjoy reading books that feature teenagers as the protagonists and include the types of situations appropriate for teenagers. No other books are young adult, regardless of what anyone says.

Yes, teenagers might read some books written for adults, and they might also read some middle-grade books. True YA books are not what teenagers might read. True YA books feature teenagers as the protagonists along with the social issues. It's that simple.

In closing, I want to point out that it's okay not to like the YA category. However, I fail to understand why people force themselves to read YA books when they don't like them. YA books are for those of us who enjoy them. If everyone else will stay away from them and quit bashing the books and insulting us, then we can all live in peace, enjoying what we like.

Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-73727903916795295032024-02-26T11:00:00.001-06:002024-02-26T11:00:00.148-06:00Judy Bolton #3 The Invisible Chimes Glossy Internal Illustrations
The early Judy Bolton books have glossy internal illustrations.
Click on each image in order to see it at a higher resolution.

Glossy frontispiece used from 1932 to 1942:

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I would like to get the UK editions, but I am balking at the postage cost. I think my reluctance is tied to the fact that the UK editions are stylized just slightly different, so I don't see the point in paying a higher price to acquire them. Additionally, international mail often arrives damaged, especially when packaged badly like what Amazon typically does.

With patience, I can probably acquire all of the UK editions secondhand from US sellers. I just purchased four of them. They were only $8.00 each, and that included shipping and tax. If I were to purchase each book from Amazon UK, the books would cost around $22 each.

Two of the books have lightly creased spines, but I am pleased with the condition. I have more books for sale on eBay, and eBay is a site with much higher traffic. My sales should be higher on eBay, yet they aren't.

I decided on Thursday to put my books on sale at 10% off to see if that would move anything. Everything was put on sale except for my solid blue and tweed Nancy Drew books on Etsy, which have been selling briskly. It amused me that after I started my sale that more tweed books sold and at the regular price since they weren't on sale. I don't have to do anything to entice buyers of those books. The tweed books are currently in great demand for whatever reason.

After nothing budged on eBay, I raised my discount on eBay to 15% off.

Jennifer's Series Books on eBay

Etsy is still at 10% off.

Jennifer's Series Books on Etsy

I then finally figured out that my free shipping promotion on eBay had expired in late December. Oops. That is partly why my sales tanked. I typically get many orders that are just a few dollars above the minimum free shipping threshold, so the promotion does help my sales.

I now once again have free shipping on eBay for orders of $40 or more, plus all inventory is 15% off.

On Etsy, I have free shipping for orders of $35 or more, plus all inventory is 10% off.

The sales run through Saturday or Sunday. It's too complicated for me to explain the specifics. I had trouble getting the eBay sale to run. I had to create more than one sale and couldn't delete either. I ended up with my items split between two sales ending at different times.
Jennifer Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com0
