You earn money somehow to pay your bills, buy something that makes you smile, etc. Statistically, you have a job.

Bookselling is a job. There is a great deal of work involved in bookselling. Booksellers also have bills to pay.

Booksellers need to pay less than collectors in order to make a profit, so they - by definition - do not cut collectors out of a buy. They are usually on the short side of the seesaw. If you lost an auction to someone, it is because you 1) lost out to a collector with deeper pockets or 2) you were looking for a bargain or 3) you didn't recognize something that made that particular volume worth more than a similar copy without that something. Booksellers can't pay the myriad of bills - personal and professional - by paying more than a collector would willingly pay.

We are not your enemies. We are your helpers. We find copies of books that are not available locally. Of course, that means someone loses out - someone also gains. Yes we are middlemen, however without us the market would be much smaller and the books would be a bit harder to find.

For what it's worth, I deal in few series books. The profit is too slim for most of the books - I can't make minimum wage doing a listing on most of them. I do sell a few when they are profitable.

Bad dealers, though, are a bane to collectors and dealers alike. They deserve to be exposed. Don't hide their names. We all make mistakes, but intentional fraud is just that and needs to be exposed.Michael Bathrickhttps://millracebooks.net/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157530669780468545.post-18006369528175801212019-11-10T16:18:18.106-06:002019-11-10T16:18:18.106-06:00I have recently sold my "discards" at th...I have recently sold my "discards" at the recent Nancy Drew conventions in Toronto and Savannah. As a collector, I know the "value" of the books that I have to offer. I also want to lure in new collectors by offering "starter books" at a good value. Part of selling at the conventions is often educating the buyer about the different versions of the books. The difference between OT and RT...the different artwork. I want new collectors to get great books at a reasonable price. Most of my books are my discards when I have upgraded my collection and I would tell people about that at these conventions. I have not thought about doing that when I sell on Ebay, but perhaps I should mention it. "I am selling this book because I found a better one!!" LOL Also when I am at library sales etc. I often look for books that I know other collectors want. I have friends who want Judy Bolton even though I am not a huge fan of Judy Bolton, so if I see a nice one with DJ in the wild I will buy it, then if my friend already has it, I am stuck with it, unless I try to sell it at a convention or on ebay. I'll just say this.

It's only certain people who get criticized, and the point of this post was to try to get collectors to realize that they should think before judging. It's like awhile back when I saw a woman throwing stuff out her car window and smiling. I thought she was throwing trash out, and I thought her behavior was disgusting. As I drove off, I saw the birds eating the seed she was throwing out her window. I felt bad that I had made a quick judgment that was wrong. I hope other collectors will begin thinking before judging.Jennifer Whitehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10405593758228423001noreply@blogger.com
