August 2011 Sales on Bonanza and eBay

Traffic remained steady to my Jennifer's Series Books booth on Bonanza during August, but sales dropped by quite a bit. In August, I had 14 transactions and sold 44 books. This is what I sold by series.

Nancy Drew - 40
Dana Girls - 2
Trixie Belden - 1
Kay Tracey - 1

This is what I sold by dollar amount.

up to $4.99 - 24
$5.00 to $9.99 - 11
$10.00 to $14.99 - 5
$15.00 to $19.99 - 2
$21.99 - 1
$360.00 - 1

I had 7 transactions processed through PayPal, 4 through Google Checkout, and 3 through Amazon.

I listed very few books during most of August, which may be a reason why my sales were down. I have noticed that whenever I list new books that some of them sell immediately along with older listings.

I had more transactions on eBay during August, since I finally hit upon the right method for selling books fast on eBay in the current market. Here is a list of what I sold on eBay, and I have not included the three lots which were not paid for by the buyers, since those transactions are not valid.

5 Dana Girls Beige Spine Picture Covers #1, 2, 3, 6, 23 - $11.00
Nancy Drew #1, 3, and 5 Vintage Tweed Books with DJs - $15.50

Most of the lots were listed with an opening bid and a Buy It Now price that was not too much higher. The lots that closed with prices ending with .99 closed at either the opening bid price or at the Buy It Now price. The other prices were the result of bidding.

The purpose of the eBay listings is to move out books fast. I have too many extras of certain picture cover edition Nancy Drew books, so I am selling them in lots for pretty low prices per book. I always have too many copies of the low-numbered titles. I have also had too many of #38, 39 and 40, other scattered titles, and even #55. I have used #55 to help get rid of other books. I have also included any double oval endpaper books that I have acquired in these lots.

Since you are obviously THE mathmatecian... what percentage do you estimate that Ebay and Paypal are scamming the sellers for? Just a ballpark figure.

And forget about their silly incentives.

You cannot keep up with them, nor to develop a system as they keep changing their fees.

My low-end estimate is between 40-45%. I try my best to ignore them.

Plus due to some cretin's feedback months ago Ebay/Paypal is holding on to my money (via Paypal). ...

FOR TWENTY ONE DAYS. No notice. Nothing. My goofy ratings are terrific. No problems within months.

Obviously a scam to gain interest.

Now it may be because I cancelled a number of foreign transactions which is a recent Bozo N-No but the required new forms just added
for international mail just add to the aggravation which foreign transactions already are.

I like to help these people... so few are still sellers are bothering. but most do not appreciate it at all or grant you any slack.appreciate the extra work so I have stopped. Period.

The fees are exorbitant. Comparing my August eBay invoice to my July Bonanza invoice, I owed roughly the same amount in fees to the two sites. However, I sold 2.8 times more on Bonanza for the same amount in fees. My Bonanza fees were 4.2% while my eBay fees were 11.8%.

What is really killing me are the fees on the shipping charges on eBay. I have finally figured out how to rig the shipping so that it also covers the shipping fees. I am also watching for the form to reset itself. I took a big hit on a heavy lot because the weight reset to a couple of pounds, and that was a lot that sold low. Ouch. eBay has a lot of glitches on the listing form.

We are paying for the executives' salaries and for whatever random companies that eBay decides to buy. It's all about the stockholders.

Oh yeah! Thanks for the insight! No more free shipping for me! HA!

Right, the free shipping has very little impact on vintage books. I'm sure eBay is correct that free shipping is a motivator for shiny new electronic items, but people who buy vintage books will buy them whether shipping is free or not.
